Polypropylene (PP)

You are here

What is polypropylene (PP)?

Polypropylene has a relatively high crystallization (60 – 70 %) at a density of 0.900 – 0.915 g/cm³ and is therefore a polymeric, semi-crystalline thermoplastic. Compared to polyethylene, PP has high rigidity and hardness, although its impact strength is significantly lower.

Polypropylene can be used at up to 120 °C, but it is very susceptible to thermo-oxidative ageing.

It is also highly resistant to chemicals and has good heat resistance and electrical insulation. Like other polyolefins, PP has low water absorption.

Glass fiber reinforced PP (PP GF 30) can also be used if required. As a high-temperature polypropylene (PP-HT), a material with excellent heat resistance at up to 140 °C can also be obtained.

Polypropylene is often used for pump and waste water pipes.
