Fluorine rubber (FKM)

What is fluororubber (FKM)?

Fluororubber is a synthetic elastomer that is particularly resistant to high temperatures and many chemicals, including hydrocarbons. It has excellent resistance to ageing. Most applications for FKM are found in sealing technology. Fluororubber is also frequently used in vacuum technology because FKM has a very low permeation rate (gas penetration). FKM is not resistant to esters and ketones and generally has rather poor mechanical properties. In addition, the material is many times more expensive than other elastomers.

The best-known name for FKM is the trade name Viton® from DuPont. The abbreviation FPM is also still in use.

The trade name is a registered trademark of the manufacturer.
