Shore hardness

What is Shore hardness?

Shore hardness is a defined measurement that indicates the relative resistance of the surface to indentation by a defined body with a given load. The Shore A test is usually carried out with a truncated cone needle. The test is standardized in DIN ISO 7619, DIN 53505 or
ASTM
D 676.

The most common Shore hardnesses for standard rubber articles are soft (approx. 45 ° ShA), medium (approx. 55 ° ShA) and hard (approx. 70 ° ShA). Almost all articles can be produced in the range between 30 °ShA and 90 °ShA.

The hardness of plastics tends to be determined according to Shore D.

The Shore hardness test for rubber/rubber-metal articles is only used to identify the rubber version; the decisive factor for vibration dampers is always the spring characteristic curve.
